Nuclear Security Leadership

Tim DriscollTim Driscoll
Acting Associate Administrator for Defense Nuclear Security

Mr. Driscoll joined the Department of Energy in 1983 in the engineering intern program at the Albuquerque Operations Office.  He started his career as a Mechanical Engineer in the Weapon Development Division.  Working in the Office of Process Development, he developed expertise in the unique materials and manufacturing processes utilized in nuclear weapons.

Tim then joined the Production Operations Division, also in an engineering capacity.  His nuclear weapon expertise continued to broaden as he managed the Master Nuclear Schedule for Plutonium, assuring its safeguards, while making it available for production.

His weapon expertise and engineering background led him naturally to weapon program management, where in the Weapon Programs Division he served as the lead system engineer on the W68 program until 1988.

In 1988, Tim was selected as a supervisor, taking over as Chief of the Technical Support Branch of the Transportation Safeguards Division.  In this role he served as the chief engineer for the safety and security of the specialty highway, rail and communication equipment used in safe and secure transportation of weapons.

In 1995 he broadened his experience base in the Department by moving into administrative roles first as the Chief Learning Officer in the position of Director, Qualification and Training Division.  After approximately two years, he was then selected as the Chief Information Officer as the Director, Information Resources Management Division; again serving in that capacity for approximately two years.

His desire to return to engineering challenges led him into the position of Deputy Director, Office of Construction and Engineering Programs.  Here he became a certified project manager, working on nuclear construction projects and managing federal program managers across the DOE.

From 2002 to 2008, Tim returned to his passion for nuclear weapon programs as the Director of the Nuclear Bombs Division.  He is the NNSA’s Program Manager for stockpiled bomb programs, responsible for their safety, security, reliability, and maintenance.  In 2006, Tim led the project which achieved First Production for the B61 Life Extension Program, successfully achieving this significant stockpile improvement milestone.

In February, 2008, the NNSA Administrator selected Mr. Driscoll as the acting Associate Administrator for Defense Nuclear Security.  In this capacity, he is responsible for protection of NNSA personnel, facilities, nuclear weapons, and information from a full spectrum of threats, most notably from terrorism, which has become of paramount concern post September 11, 2001.
