National Ignition Facility

National Ignition Facility (NIF)
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The construction of the 192-beam 1.8 MJ UV NIF, the world’s most energetic laser, was completed in March 2009. Current experiments are focusing on using the NIF laser and other ICF high energy density facilities leading to demonstrate fusion ignition and thermonuclear burn in the laboratory.  The NIF is also being used to support basic science and SSP experiments. By the end of FY 2012, the NIF will transition to a User Facility. For more information on NIF, visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s NIF webpage.
