With the holiday season upon us, I hope you will be able to spend time with the people that make your life happier and more meaningful. Whether it’s an office get-together or family gathering, this is a special time for being with loved ones, family, and friends. 

This is also a time of year that inspires us to look back on what we have accomplished together.  Each day I’m impressed and humbled by the work you do for our country.  The dedication you show to implementing the President’s nuclear security agenda and keeping the American people safe is unmatched, and you have my deepest gratitude for the professionalism and thoughtfulness with which you do it.

This year brought some of the most complex issues we have ever faced.  From our response in Japan to the dismantlement of the last B53, you rose to the challenges that came our way and proved once again that NNSA has one of the most talented and diligent workforces in the Federal government.  I know that 2012 will bring more even more opportunities for us to achieve great things together.

I would be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to remind you that the deadline for the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign is quickly approaching.  If you would like to participate, it’s not too late.  NNSA regularly has one of the highest participation rates in the Federal government, and the dedication you have shown to your work has been surpassed only by your dedication to helping those in need.

Neile and I wish each of you a safe and enjoyable holiday season, and look forward to the work we will do together in 2012.

NNSA celebrates the contributions of the men and women working across the nuclear security enterprise who have given back to their communities during this holiday season.

Employees have found countless ways to make this holiday season more cheerful by collecting food, shoes, and coats, or by lending a helping hand to the less fortunate in their communities. NNSA employees have also participated in various charitable campaigns that help families in their local communities.

NNSA Giving Highlights Include:

Albuquerque Complex

  • Donated 14,278 lbs of turkey to the Roadrunner Food Bank for the Holiday Season to benefit low income families in need.
  • Donated over 100 pumpkins to a local non-profit agency for their annual pumpkin patch party for children in need.
  • Collected 13,328 lbs of food for the 2011 Feds Feed Families Campaign.
  • Collectively pledged over $210,000.00 for the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign.
  • Over 100 volunteers participated in the 2011 Make a Difference Day Campaign serving eight different non-profit organizations throughout the city.

Headquarters – Forrestal/Germantown

  • Forrestal and Germantown employees collected 19, 552 lbs of food for the Feds Feed Families campaign this year.presents 1
  • NNSA's overall CFC goal is $364,874. NNSA employees in the National Capital Area have pledged $175,903 to CFC, or 42.8% of the goal.
  • To raise awareness and donations for CFC, NNSA has raised $2,500 from eight special events, including holiday bake sales, karaoke, and a highly successful chili cook-off. Three more events are scheduled before the end of the campaign, which will conclude on Dec. 31. Currently, NNSA also has the highest number of Eagle and Double Eagle Contributors in the National Capital Area. There have been 48 Eagle Donors who are donating 1 percent of their annual salary, and nine Double Eagle Donors who have donated 2 percent of their annual salary.

Kansas City Plant

  • Kansas City Plant (KCP) employees gave more than $300,000 to local United Way agencies and others during the annual Employee Giving Campaign and the Kansas City Site Office raised $21,000 for the Sherwood Center for autistic children during the annual Combined Federal Campaign.
  • KCP employees adopted 150 Angels and 10 Family and Senior Angels from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. The program makes sure that no child is left without a gift on Christmas morning. KCP volunteers bought and then delivered a mountain of toys, games and family meals valued at $7,500.
  • In October, KCP employees adopted 12 homes and a local Community Center to repair and refurbish. More than 320 employees volunteered to help Christmas in October; one of Honeywell’s Hometown Solution partners which works year-round to help with homes of economically challenged residents.
  • KCP employees prepared more than 15,000 meals through the year-round Harvester's Back Pack program to help ensure that children and the elderly have food on the weekend. More than $15,000 was raised and donated during FY11.
  • KCP's contractor, Honeywell FM&T, presented a check for $10,000 in support of Coats for Kids to News Radio KMBZ 980 AM. Coats for Kids provides new and used coats to children in the Kansas City community who might otherwise not have one.
  • Honeywell FM&T donated $5,000 to support science education at Operation Breakthrough’s after school programs. The organization serves more than 600 children daily from low-income families in Kansas City’s urban core. KCP employees support the effort by serving as year-round volunteers.

Lawrence Livermore

  • Lawrence Livermore conducted its annual Brighter Holidays Program, in which various departments around the Lab "adopt" families in need throughout the Greater Bay Area to provide gifts, toys, food and other necessities.

Los Alamos National Laboratory

  • To make the holidays brighter, employees helped children and seniors in Northern New Mexico have a brighter holiday by participating in the annual holiday gift tag program. Gifts purchased by LANL employees were distributed to partner social service agencies in time for Christmas.  Employees collected 1,130 gifts for Northern New Mexico area children and seniors.
  • More than 500 families in Northern New Mexico sat down to a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal thanks to the generosity of LANL employees. More than 500 food boxes and nearly 350 frozen turkeys were distributed to partner organizations

  • The 20th annual Wreaths Across America is an offshoot of Arlington National Cemetery's annual laying of 5,000 holiday wreaths there. This year, URS is provided $2,000 to purchase wreaths and Los Alamos National Security, LLC and SOC Los Alamos each put in $1,500 toward this effort. Wreaths were sold to LANL employees for placement at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. After the fundraising was completed, the Community Programs Office recruited volunteers to place wreaths at some of the 44,000 gravesites at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.


Nevada Site Office and NSTec

  • gift exchangeHoliday Food and Gift Drives - Each year, NSTec and the Nevada Site Office participate in a Holiday Food and Gift Drive for our Focus School, Kit Carson College Preparatory Academy of Creative Arts and Technology. We ask organizations to sponsor families by donating food, gift cards (or wrapped gifts) for food, toys, etc. This year, eleven families were adopted by organizations.

  • Great Santa Run - More than 100 NSTec employees and their family and friends were among thousands who participated in the seventh annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run Dec. 3. According to a news report from a Las Vegas TV station, more than 12,000 walkers and runners donned their red Santa suits, raising more than $350,000 for Opportunity Village, a non-profit habilitation organization serving Clark County, Nev.

  • NSTec Volunteers Continue the Tradition at “Magical Forest” - On Dec. 10, 26 NSTec employees and their friends and family members tied on their volunteer aprons to fulfill their various roles during NSTec Volunteer Night at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest. They fulfilled roles as choo-choo train guides, Forest guards, information booth attendants, ride and miniature golf attendants, food distributors, Santa’s photo helpers and a ticket window coordinator. We even had a king and queen guiding visitors out of the Forest. Now in its 20th year, the Magical Forest typically raises more than $1 million dedicated to programs for Opportunity Village’s 1,700 people with disabilities. The Forest is open each night, from Nov. 23 to Dec. 31.

  • Toys for Tots - Generous employees stuffed 25 Toys for Tots barrels with hundreds of new toys and delivered 86 new bicycles and tricycles to the North Las Vegas Facility, Remote Sensing Laboratory-Nellis and Nevada National Security Site.

Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico

  • Sandia’s Mighty Tree. The tiny lights to Sandia’s mighty tree came from 500 school children. Because of the generosity of Sandians through the Shoes for Kids program, the students were able to get new school shoes. Just like our old collectible decorations, the program began more than 50 years ago by two scientists who decided to buy shoes for needy children instead of buying each other Christmas gifts.
  • The bells on the tree came courtesy of the more than 400 hundred Sandians who donated Christmas gifts to the New Mexico Children and Youth Department. In record time, dolls, trucks and gift cards filled every available branch on the tree. More branches were needed to make room for the overflow.
  • The beautiful garland on this year’s tree is courtesy of Sandians who donated 217 turkeys, food supplies and money to feed those in need. Each hand held another, and the garland got brighter and longer as more than $20,000 was contributed.
  • The star on this year’s tree has grown each year. This year’s star was lit by almost 72 percent of Sandians who contributed $4.5M to the United Way of Central New Mexico through Sandia’s Employee Caring Program. Donations are still coming in, so that number could easily increase. The star is the courtesy of not just the Sandia employees, but Sandia’s secret weapon, Sandia retirees.
  • There are special decorations offered by many departments throughout Sandia. They have added their own special touch. Independently they have adopted families for the holidays. Their only wish is that their help will enable their adopted families to have as beautiful a Christmas as they themselves do. These decorations come in different shapes and colors as each department has its own emblem.

Pantex

  • The Pantex Site Office was strongly involved with the Combined Federal Campaign this year. We received the “2011 Fundraiser of the Year” award in the Amarillo area. The total amount collected or pledged was $37,157.62, with 62 of 78 solicited employees participating. Various special events collected an additional $2,473.78. The total giving reflects a 3.6 percent increase from last year.back of truck gifts
  • Pantexans continued the 56-year tradition of the Pantex Christmas Project by delivering food, clothing and gifts to families in need at a huge holiday party featuring games, pizza and Santa Claus. The project this year helped 53 families, including 173 children, and 15 elderly individuals have a merry Christmas.
  • B&W Pantex was a corporate sponsor at the High Plains Food Bank’s annual food drive once again. Pantexans manned the food drive on Wednesday, Dec. 7, collecting donations of food and cash from holiday shoppers. The HPFB conducts this annual drive to help meet the growing needs of the Texas Panhandle.
  • Safeguards & Security Division officers Byron Logan and Randy Stokes hit the road Friday, Dec. 9, in an effort to help stamp out hunger in the Texas Panhandle. The pair ran approximately 30 miles from Pantex to the High Plains Food Bank’s food drive. The two delivered approximately 1,500 pounds of food and $500.00 in a Pantex Bearcat, an armored vehicle that followed them throughout their run.
  • Visitors to the Hilltop Senior Citizens Center were treated to a Thanksgiving feast provided by B&W Pantex and served by B&W Pantex employees.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

  • Throughout the year, staff at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory generously give of their time and resources to help a variety of local organizations through the Team Battelle program. In fact, during the 2011 fiscal year alone, over 2,238 PNNL staff volunteered over 25,200 hours to 63 various community projects.
  • In FY11, Battelle contributed a total of $677,497 in corporate funds to Tri-Cities area philanthropic and civic organizations. This donation brought total corporate giving in the area since 1965 to $23.4 million.
  • During the holiday season, PNNL volunteers turn up their philanthropic efforts. As part of their 14th annual “For the Love of Giving” campaign, PNNL staff donated gifts to 25 local nonprofit organizations, including those serving children, the elderly, deployed soldiers and animals. And during their annual holiday food drive, PNNL raised $17,749 cash and donated over 5,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items to local families in need. PNNL employees have also been participating in the local Coats for Kids program. This year they delivered 324 coats to schools in our community.
  • Staff additionally raised over $15,000 in 2011 for Special Olympics through their participation in the Polar Bear Plunge, and donated 111,118 airline frequent flier miles to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Volunteers at PNNL also held a series of book fairs on campus. Proceeds, in the form of over 100 donated books, benefit the Kadlec Regional Medical Center Pediatrics Center.

SSO

  • Sandia Site Office employees assisted in making the holiday season a little brighter for the children in the Albuquerque area by donating to the local campaign for the Marines’ Toys for Tots Foundation with a toy drive at the office and another toy drive at their annual end of year celebration.
  • The Sandia Site Office teamed with Sandia National Laboratories to collect 52,385 lbs of food for the 2011 Feds Feed Families Campaign.
  • SSO employees donated 610 lbs of turkey on “Take a Turkey to Work Day” to the Roadrunner Food Bank for the Holiday Season to benefit low income families in need.
  • Following a co-worker’s leukemia diagnosis, SSO held a blood marrow donor registration drive and over 40 employees registered to be potential donors.
  • SSO employees participated in the 2011 Make a Difference Day Campaign at various non-profit organizations throughout the city.
  • During the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign, SSO employees contributed $45,906, nearly 12 percent more than last year and almost $3000 more than the goal for the office.

Y-12

  • Y-12ers give Coats for the Cold: For the tenth straight year, the annual United Way Coat Drive proved successful with donations of 658 coats and other winter wear; 133 scarves; 63 pairs of gloves and 133 hats and toboggans to benefit the Volunteer Ministry Center in downtown Knoxville. Employees handmade 104 of the scarves and 73 of the toboggans to be distributed with the coats. More than 25 coat drive coordinators helped to collect, bag and manage the many items donated during the week of October 10. Construction employees not only picked up the coats from the many locations but also provided a place to store the coats then helped sort and deliver.

  • turkeysThe Y-12 Employees’ Society led this year's effort to provide clothing, toys and necessities such as bedding and diapers to some 700 children from six counties. Angel Trees were set up in several locations at Y-12 and fundraising work, which included two local businesses donating 50 percent of profits during a promotion on behalf of the project. Large donations also came from outside sources such as the Atomic Trades & Labor Council, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 19 and the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. Volunteers shopped for 150 angels and also sorted all gifts for distribution to all the counties.

  • More than 80 families in rural Appalachia enjoyed Thanksgiving meals thanks to employees in the Facilities, Infrastructure and Services (FI&S) organization at the Y-12 National Security Complex. On November 10, FI&S employees donated 81 food boxes — each with the ingredients for a full Thanksgiving meal — to Mission of Hope, a group that works with agencies in rural Appalachian counties to funnel donations to those most in need, along with a check for $1,050, enough to purchase 105 turkeys to go along with the food boxes. Atomic Trades and Labor Council union representatives and janitorial groups from Y-12 spearheaded the effort by requesting food donations from hourly staff and monetary donations from management to purchase turkeys.
  • Other community outreach included Toys for Tots, United Way ($1.56 million), Golden Harvest (food drive and turkeys), Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Children's Place, Salvation Army Coats Drive.

NNSA Defense Programs recently collected items for the Toys for Tots program. Nearly 20 large boxes of new and unwrapped toys were collected from throughout Forrestal Building. Don Cook, Deputy Administrator for NNSA’s Defense Programs, presented the toys to the Marines at the annual Defense Programs holiday party. Dr. Cook thanked everyone who participated in the program and commended the Marines for their continued service to the nation and for their commitment in providing toys to children who might not have otherwise receive toys during the holiday season.

Since 1947, the Toys for Tots program through the U.S. Marine Corps has distributed more than 420 million toys to more than 196 million underprivileged children. In 2010, Marines distributed toys to more than 7.2 million children.

A National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) historical milepost was accomplished on schedule and safely when Flattop was successfully started up at the Nevada National Security Site. Flattop is the third of four critical assembly machines operated as part of NCERC to be brought online. Activities are ongoing to startup the last machine, Godiva, in 2012. These machines (Comet, Planet, Flattop and Godiva) operated by the NNSA led DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program will be used to train personnel on criticality safety and conduct various experiments providing precise nuclear data for Nuclear Counter Terrorism, Stockpile Stewardship, and criticality safety.

 

 

computer screensWhen Administrator D’Agostino extended the challenge to build a single, integrated enterprise through the OneNNSA initiative, we laid out an aggressive plan to update and leverage the existing information technology (IT) infrastructure. This strategy consists of three pillars that when functioning together will create an advanced, secure and agile network.

The first of these three strategic pillars is the NNSA Network Vision (2NV). 2NV will modernize the current environment by providing a secure, mobile and adaptive IT infrastructure allowing the workforce to perform their duties from any device at any time. 2NV will remove barriers to collaboration, connect employees, and appeal to future employees within the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

As its own pillar, 2NV offers three new facets: OneVoice, YourCloud, and the OneNNSA Network. Here is a breakdown of features each will provide:

OneVoice

  • Provides a unified communications stack allowing Web and desktop video conferencing, instant messaging, voice and email from one unified client
  • Supports President Obama’s Nov. 8 Executive Order to implement agency-wide collaboration tools reducing costs
  • Offers one of the first ever government social networks

YourCloud

  • Expedites the procurement, installation and configuration time of a server from 30-90 days to 30 minutes
  • Transitions to an expense model for data centers/servers
  • Leverages the General Services Administration FedRAMP IaaS contract vehicle to protect future IT budgets

OneNNSA Network

  • Establishes point-to-point Virtual Private Network for network edge between all the site locations and the Federal cloud
  • Lays a secure, solid foundation for future enterprise solutions
  • Provides a flexible, agile architecture to provide information security
  • Enables work from anywhere across Nuclear Security Enterprise


We’re already making strides in delivering these capabilities to the NNSA. This project is set to wrap in late 2012 and will lead the way to a secure and mobile IT infrastructure. Stay tuned for updates and more information about OneVoice, powered by YourCloud, on the OneNNSA Network.

A crucial part of the mission of NNSA’s Office of Nonproliferation and International Security (NIS) is to support the development of cutting-edge nuclear safeguards technologies, a necessary component of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) ability to verify of countries’ declarations about nuclear material and their related activities .  The  IAEA works to increase international confidence in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which President Obama has referred to as, “the cornerstone of the world’s efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.”

Recently, the IAEA organized a workshop on Sealing, Containment and Authentication Technologies, held in Vienna, Austria from November 9-11, 2011.  The workshop’s goal was to identify technologies that could be used in nuclear facilities to monitor doors and gates guarding nuclear material and activities, protect cabinets and equipment from unauthorized access, perform remote monitoring and tamper detection, and track container shipments worldwide.    A photo of an existing IAEA seal technology is shown here.

The workshop hosted a team of independent and international experts to identify developing and existing commercial products that may be valuable to meet these challenges.  DOE national laboratories, with support from NIS and the U.S. Support Program for IAEA Safeguards, participated and provided technology concepts and expert reviewers for the workshop. The review team selected several promising technologies for the IAEA’s consideration for further testing and evaluation.

Through this and other efforts, NIS is applying its unique technical and policy expertise to achieve the President’s vision of reducing nuclear dangers and creating a world without nuclear weapons.

DisruptorThe Association of University Research Parks presented its 2011 Innovation Award to the small, minority-owned business TEAM Technologies Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., for commercialization of a Sandia National Laboratories technology that uses water to disable improvised explosive devices.

The technology — TEAM licensed it as “Stingray” — was invented by Steve Todd and Juan Carlos Jakaboski, both Sandia employees, and Chance Hughs, a former Sandia employee. The device, which shoots a thin blade of water capable of penetrating steel, is placed near a suspected bomb or package and shreds or punches a hole in it before it detonates.

The device is small enough to be carried in a soldier’s backpack and rugged enough to be placed by a robot. The licensing agreement between Sandia and TEAM, which is located in the Sandia Science & Technology Park, allowed the business to advance the device’s design and bring it to market.

AURP said the Stingray is a dramatic improvement in water disruption tool technology, and is already being used in warzones by the military against IEDs placed where they can kill or maim troops. TEAM manufactured and shipped more than 8,000 of the units to Afghanistan and 2,000 to U.S. government and law enforcement agencies. The company credits its location in the Sandia Science & Technology Park with helping it collaborate with Sandia and grow as a business.

The 16th Annual AURP Awards of Excellence, presented Dec. 1 in New Orleans, recognize the achievements of outstanding research parks and industry veterans and encourages the development of best practices among research and science parks.

TFT

National Security Technologies and WSI Nevada Team employees have come together once again for the Southern Nevada and Nye County communities. More than 25 barrels overflowing with toys and 86 bicycles were donated this year to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

DRAA part of NNSA’s Small Business Week, today’s profile highlights Delta Research Associates, Inc., a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, is a federal government contractor located in Alexandria, Va, Since 1988, DRA has provided management, organizational, administrative and analytical support to federal agencies. DRA’s management has an average of more than 30 years of experience supporting federal organizations. DRA has more than 100 employees who support services in locations throughout the Continental U.S.

DRA has provided policy support, performance plans, and job descriptions for federal staff both at Albuquerque and at NNSA headquarters.  DRA also supports the DOE Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, enabling DRA to be cited by the Federal Times as one of the top fifty intelligence services contractors to the federal government.

One customer of DRA said, “Services provided by DRA staff meet specifications and measures up to commonly accepted technical and professional standards. Very little government technical direction is required to solve problems that arise during performance. On-site support provided outstanding support to ensure success of monthly HQ AFP.”
