Containers

The Containers program provides for all activities related to the shipping containers that safely transport nuclear materials and components across the country. The program deals with everything from the research and development of containers to the fielding and maintenance to the off-site transportation authorization. New container systems are developed to improve the safety, security, of these shipping containers as well as to help minimize the need for a high number of specialized containers that are only able to carry certain contents. The work in this program directly supports an accelerated material consolidation program, as part of NNSA’s Directed Stockpile Work dismantlements and Life Extension Programs. Containers for over the road transportation must conform to standards established by the Department of Transportation.
