WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the DOE Office of Science announce a financial assistance funding opportunity for research grants through their joint program in High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas (HEDLP).
The announcement is posted on the Office of Science’s Grants & Contracts website  and on FedConnect . The Funding Opportunity Number is DE-FOA-0000583. Letters of intent are due by Sept. 30, 2011 and full applications are due by Nov. 3, 2011.
“This funding opportunity further demonstrates the strong and valuable partnership between the NNSA and the Office of Science. It promotes NNSA’s commitment in nuclear security by encouraging great science and training a strong future generation of scientists,” said Chris Deeney, NNSA’s Assistant Deputy Administrator for Stockpile Stewardship. “The work funded will enhance and promote cutting edge research in HEDP, a very multidisciplinary field that supports the missions of both organizations. I encourage individuals to apply for this funding opportunity.”
Proposals are sought in the following areas: High-Energy-Density Hydrodynamics; Radiation-Dominated Dynamics and Material Properties; Magnetized High-Energy-Density Plasma Physics; Nonlinear Optics of Plasmas and Laser-Plasma Interactions; Relativistic HED Plasmas and Intense Beam Physics; Warm Dense Matter, Diagnostics for HEDLP; and Community Development Activities.
“Insights enabling deeper understanding of great questions of nature and potentially the creation of a miniature star on earth are emerging in the exciting research surrounding High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas,” said Ed Synakowski, DOE Associate Director of Science for Fusion Energy Sciences. “The interdisciplinary nature of HEDLP cuts across the interests of both NNSA and the Office of Science, and the strong partnership between these two entities enhances the development of this important area of science.”
The joint HEDLP program was established in 2008 by NNSA’s Office of Inertial Confinement Fusion and DOE’s Office of Science. Initially, this program was a combination of work that was funded as part of the NNSA’s Stewardship Science Academic Alliances Program in the research area of high energy density physics and the DOE Office of Science’s HEDLP Program and Innovative Confinement Concepts Program. The first solicitation for this new joint program in HEDLP was held in 2008. A total of 128 proposals responsive to this solicitation were received, and 23 proposals were chosen for awards for projects of between three and five years.
Steady advances in increasing the energy, power, and brightness of lasers and particle beams and advances in pulsed power systems have made possible the exploration of matter at extremely high energy density in the laboratory. In particular, new experimental regimes could be realized by fully exploiting the scientific capabilities of existing and planned DOE facilities, as well as the relevant Department of Defense and university facilities. Progress in the exploration of extreme states of matter has also been facilitated by advances in computer simulation and diagnostic techniques.
