WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representatives of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence and Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” met this week in Copenhagen, Denmark for their Sixth Annual Nuclear Security Best Practices Exchange. The two day workshop focused on nuclear security with a particular emphasis on managing and securing nuclear materials.
NNSA’s Material Protection, Control and Accounting (MPC&A) program, implemented under the MPC&A Agreement between the Governments of the Russian Federation and the United States and signed on October 2, 1999, sponsors the exchanges, which are designed to bring together technical experts in nuclear material security with high-level policy makers to improve mutual understanding of the challenges each country faces in nonproliferation. Workshop participants focused on access controls systems, mitigating insider threats, conducting vulnerability assessments, and cyber security at nuclear material facilities. Douglas Fremont, Chief, Defense Nuclear Security, NNSA, participated in this trilateral meeting along with counterparts Yevgeniy Sofyin, Deputy Director General for Security Issues at “ROSATOM”, and David Reynolds, Head of Defence Security of the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence.
“These meetings present the opportunity for three nations to share creative solutions to the common challenges we face in maintaining global nuclear security,” said Anne Harrington, Principal Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. “They provide us with an opportunity to work collaboratively to improve nuclear security, and are an important part of President Obama’s nuclear security agenda.”
