William S. “Steve” Goodrum is the Manager of the Los Alamos Field Office since Oct. 1, 2017. He is responsible for administering the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) management and operating contract and all Federal activities on the site. He leads a Federal team that oversees management, security, quality assurance, environment, health and safety of the national and nonproliferation security missions at LANL.
Goodrum is a member of the Senior Executive Service and has more than 40 years of experience in the National Security Enterprise.
He came to Los Alamos from the Office of Defense Programs at NNSA headquarters in Washington, where he was Assistant Deputy Administrator for Stockpile Management. He managed the U.S. nuclear weapon stockpile to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the nation’s nuclear deterrent. He also led establishing and maintaining partnerships and cooperation between other Department of Energy (DOE) elements, the Department of Defense, Congressional members and staff, outside agencies, industries, and academia that are engaged in nuclear weapon production and operations activities.
Prior to coming to Washington, Goodrum served as Deputy Manager of the Sandia Field Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 2002 until 2005.
Previously, he served as Manager of DOE’s Amarillo Area Office from 1997 to 1999, where he was responsible for all activities at the Pantex Plant. The Pantex Plant is the nation’s primary nuclear weapon assembly and disassembly plant. It has diverse manufacturing capabilities, operates with disciplined nuclear safety standards, and is protected by special security forces.
Goodrum served as an advisor on the Nuclear Engineering Advisory Council for the Texas A&M University Nuclear Engineering Department from 1996 to 2006. He is also a senior technical safety expert.
He earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of New Mexico and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso.
