Steven Lawrence

Steven J. Lawrence is the Manager of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nevada Field Office. Prior tobeing named Manager, he served as Acting Manager and Deputy Manager. As NFO Manager, he is responsible for operation and maintenance of the 1,370-square-mile Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), as well as other facilities and sites across the U.S., to accomplish NNSA mission requirements in stockpile stewardship and management, nuclear test readiness, crisis management, nonproliferation, environmental management and stewardship, and other science and technology development areas. This complex employs over 4,000 people and has a budget of over $600 million. The complex also executes a significant Work for Others mission, supporting such initiatives as threat reduction, first responder training and sensor development for the Department of Homeland Security.

Prior to assuming the Deputy Manager position in 2007, Mr. Lawrence served as the NNSA Nevada Site Office Assistant Manager for Site Operations (AMSO). As the AMSO, he was responsible for directing and overseeing the Facility Representative Program; site planning, development, and operational coordination; emergency management program; Facilities and Infrastructure Recapitalization Program (FIRP); capital construction; maintenance of NNSS facilities, infrastructure, and equipment; and oversight of the Ten-Year Comprehensive Site Plan, designed to maintain and modernize the NNSS’s infrastructure and facilities.

From 2002 to 2003, Mr. Lawrence served as the Deputy Assistant Manager for Technical Services (AMTS) responsible for directing and overseeing the NNSS’s environment, safety and health program; nuclear safety, security, and engineering; capital construction and project management; as well as management and maintenance of NNSS facilities and infrastructure. During his tenure, the NNSS Facility Representative Program was the first major DOE Office to have 100 percent fully qualified Facility Representatives. Prior to being Deputy AMTS, Mr. Lawrence served as Director of the Engineering and Asset Management Division and Engineering Divisions. Other positions he has held included Project Operations Team Leader, Underground Test Areas (UGTA) Project Manager (Total Estimated Cost over $800M), and the UGTA Project Engineer.

Mr. Lawrence began his federal career as an Engineering Intern in 1990. Prior to joining DOE, he was a Service Engineer associated with Atlas Wireline / Atlas International performing geophysical surveys across southern California.
