OMEGA amplifiers

Two glass laser systems make up the Omega Laser Facility: the 60-beam, 30kJ UV OMEGA laser that has been operational since 1995, and the OMEGA EP addition with four new beamlines that was completed in 2008. Each of OMEGA EP’s beamlines can deliver 6.5 kJ UV to one side of a target. Two of the beamlines can be operated as high energy petawatt lasers (2.6 kJIR in 10 ps, each) and can propagate into either the OMEGA or OMEGA EP target chambers. The Omega Laser Facility is operated as a User facility that supports NNSA’s Ignition and non-Ignition needs. 30% of the shot time is of the Omega Laser Facility is devoted to Fundamental HEDP science. University users have access to Omega Facility time through the peer-reviewed National Laser Users’ Facility , and weapon’s laboratory scientists (including those at LLE) have access through the Laboratory Basic Science Program for Fundamental HEDP science. More than 300 scientists from universities and laboratories around the world are members of the OMEGA Laser Facility Users Group. More than 20,000 target shots have been performed on the Omega Laser Facility. For more information on OMEGA visit the UR/LLE website.
