Over 2,300 members of the Nuclear Security Enterprise were recently singled out for significant contributions to our nation’s nuclear deterrent. Since 1982, the Office of Defense Programs has presented annual Awards of Excellence to individuals and teams who have distinguished themselves through exemplary performance. Ninety-one separate awards are being handed out for 2016.
“It’s important for the Office of Defense Programs to recognize the exceptional, complex, challenging, and innovative work that employees across the enterprise carry out each day, because their contributions ensure that our stockpile – the bedrock of the nation’s security – remains safe, secure and effective,” said Phil Calbos, the acting deputy administrator for Defense Programs. “NNSA’s stockpile stewardship capability is a central part of the nuclear deterrent, and it supports national and global security.”
These awards recognize significant achievements in quality, productivity, cost savings, safety or creativity supporting NNSA’s nuclear weapons modernization program. Both federal employees and contractors are eligible to win. To ensure a fair selection process, Defense Programs selects members to serve on an Executive Review Panel with equal representation from each office.
In 2015, the Office of Defense Programs expanded the scope of the awards to include an Exceptional Achievement category, which highlights extraordinary accomplishments in stockpile stewardship. Ideal candidates may have completed a project ahead of schedule despite budget constraints or used their nuclear security expertise to support their program as well as broader national security objectives. This year, 15 individuals or teams will receive Exceptional Achievement awards.
These awards celebrate achievements across the entire Nuclear Security Enterprise and are presented in special ceremonies throughout the year at the laboratories, sites and headquarters.
