The season of giving is upon us. Employees around the NNSA enterprise are finding unique ways to take part in the season by giving of themselves for the good of others.
For its ongoing efforts to raise money for local charities through the Helping Others More Effectively (HOME) Campaign, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) received the Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award for 2016. LLNL team members often go above the call of duty to give back to their local communities. From training therapy dogs to give comfort to students and nursing home residents, to supporting food banks and children’s shelters, to mentoring students and filling education gaps, NNSA team members at LLNL volunteer their time and effort outside of work with the support of LLNL’s corporate philanthropy programs.
A team of employees from NNSA’s Y-12 National Security Complex participated in a “Pull for Our Veterans” shooting sports event that raised over $40,000 for the Fisher House Foundation and HonorAir Knoxville. NNSA team members regularly volunteer with HonorAir Knoxville to celebrate our nation’s veterans. Last month, a team including Y-12 volunteers welcomed Manhattan Project veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials. Last month, Y-12 and local team members collected donations of food, water, household necessities, and cash for the East Tennessee Red Cross to help with wildfire relief efforts, garnering a truckload of supplies and more than $10,000 in contributions.
NNSA’s Nevada team members work, serve, and give through the United Labor Agency of Nevada to create positive changes through classes, job-hunting assistance, and local food pantries. Nevada team members last month continued ongoing support for local education through Operation Clean Desert, teaching children about ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges. Also in support of the holiday season, Nevada National Security Site sponsored a tree in the annual Magical Forest of Opportunity Village, which is a Las Vegas-based organization serving men and women with intellectual disabilities.
NNSA’s Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), shares opportunities for giving back with employees monthly. LANL team members help build homes for Habitat for Humanity participate in reading and math programs to benefit students and teachers, and boost scientific literacy in the community.
Finally, federal NNSA employees participate in the Combined Federal Campaign, the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign. It raises millions of dollars each year that support thousands of non-profit organizations throughout the world.
