NNSA Requests Further Input on Contracting Strategies for the Nuclear Weapons Complex
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced that it has released a second request for information (RFI) on ways to improve its current contracting structure for the nuclear weapons complex. NNSA, which officially posted the RFI today on the Federal Business Opportunities' website www.fedbizopps.gov , is seeking additional input and comments from the contracting community and other interested parties.
NNSA released its first RFI in September requesting written input on potential contract strategies to improve the performance and cost efficiency of the nuclear weapons complex in support of NNSA's objectives for transforming the complex. Known as Complex Transformation, NNSA is planning for a future nuclear weapons complex that is smaller, safer, less expensive, and leverages the scientific and technical capabilities of NNSA's workforce. NNSA received input from over 20 respondents to the first RFI and based on that input and discussions within the NNSA community, developed a set of potential contracting options that could promote Complex Transformation.
The second RFI released today requests input from industry and other interested parties on those options as well as other potential options. NNSA is again inviting written comments, but is also inviting respondents to request one-on-one meetings with NNSA to discuss the potential options and address their perceived benefits and drawbacks in advancing NNSA's objectives. NNSA is also seeking input on whether the options would stimulate a robust competition for future contract awards. Based on the results of these discussions NNSA will develop its contracting strategy.

The sites in NNSA's nuclear weapons complex are: Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California; Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico and California; Pantex Plant in Texas; Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee; Kansas City Plant in Missouri; Nevada Test Site in Nevada; and Savannah River Site in South Carolina (includes only tritium operations).
