The Departments of Defense (DoD), Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI), and Homeland Security (DHS) will conduct a training exercise, Prominent Hunt 17-2, in the areas of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, from September 18 to 22.
Exercise Prominent Hunt 17-2 is part of a series of regularly scheduled biannual training exercises of the United States Government National Technical Nuclear Forensics (NTNF) Ground Collection Task Force (GCTF) that have been conducted since 2012.
This training exercise provides an opportunity for the NTNF GCTF to practice and enhance its operational readiness to respond in the event of a nuclear detonation in the United States or overseas. This exercise is not being conducted in response to any ongoing world events.
Exercise Prominent Hunt 17-2 will be conducted in coordination with the New Mexico National Guard, New Mexico State Police, and the FBI Albuquerque Field Office. Land-based operations will be performed with the support of DoD and DOE low-flying airplanes and helicopters. Exercise participants will conduct operations in personal protective equipment to simulate realistic conditions.
No actual radioactive materials will be a part of this exercise and there is no danger to the public.
