WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today recognizes five new fellows as part of the Department of Energy NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF) program.
Founded in 2006 and administered by the Krell Institute, the SSGF recognizes an ever-increasing demand for scientists highly-trained in areas of interest to stewardship science. Students selected for this fellowship represent a strong academic background in a scientific or engineering discipline, and the program provides them up to four years of support while pursuing a doctoral degree in one of three major areas: materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics, high-energy density physics, or nuclear science.
“NNSA has some of the best science, technology and engineering capabilities in the world, and investing in these fields is a top priority,” said NNSA Administrator Thomas P. D’Agostino. “NNSA’s Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship program is critical in recruiting and recognizing exceptional graduate students to ensure that we are cultivating the next generation of nuclear security professionals.”
The SSGF awardees for the 2010-2011 academic year are as follows:
As part of the program, recipients are provided benefits that include a yearly stipend of $36,000, payment of all tuition and fees at the accredited U.S. college or university that they choose to attend, and an annual academic and conference travel allowance. Fellows participate in a highly regarded annual fellowship conference in Washington, D.C., and are afforded the unique opportunity to complete a three-month practicum at one of the DOE’s national defense laboratories. During the practicum experience, fellows are able to use some of the nation’s largest and most sophisticated experimental and computational facilities to conduct their research.
In order to be considered for this competitive fellowship, each applicant must provide a transcript, GRE scores, written responses to essay questions and a detailed program of study. In addition, three letters of reference are required from advisors, instructors and employers familiar with the applicant’s background and capabilities. These materials undergo careful review by a committee of distinguished individuals representing academia and the DOE national laboratories.
Based in Ames, Iowa, and established in 1997, the Krell Institute has provided technical resources, knowledge and experience in managing technology-based education and information programs, including two of the most successful Ph.D. fellowship programs offered by a U.S. science agency.
